About Ellen Raskin
Ellen Raskin (born March 13, 1928) is an award-winning American children’s book author and illustrator. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and grew up during the Great Depression. Raskin attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison before pursuing a career as an illustrator and author.
Raskin illustrated over 28 books between 1956 and 1970 before gaining widespread recognition for her novel “The Westing Game,” which was published in 1978. The book went on to win the Newberry Medal in 1979.
Her other notable achievement includes winning another Newberry Medal in 1975 for “Figgs and Phantoms.” In addition to her successful writing career, she also married Dennis Flanagan, the editor of Scientific American, in 1965.
