About Ellen Lanyon
Ellen Lanyon (born December 21, 1926) is a painter known for her dreamscapes, portraits, still-life works, and images of animals and plants. She was born in Illinois.
Lanyon earned her bachelor’s degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. She also pursued additional coursework at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, England.
She taught at New York’s Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art; Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts; and her Alma mater, the Art Institute of Chicago. Lanyon had close to eighty solo exhibitions throughout her life and contributed pieces to the permanent collections at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
Lanyon grew up in Chicago as the daughter of Ellen and Howard Lanyon.
