About Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Ella Wheeler Wilcox, born on November 5, 1850, in Wisconsin, was a poet best known for her 1883 collection “Poems of Passion.” One of her most famous works is the individual poem “The Way of the World.” She also authored a memoir titled “The Worlds and I” in 1918. Even before completing high school, she had already gained local recognition as a poet. Her poems were more popular with general readers than literary critics and were excluded from the Oxford Book of American Verse but included in an anthology called “Best Loved Poems of the American People.”
Wilcox was married to Robert Wilcox who shared her belief in the occult. Both made a pact that whoever died first would communicate with the other from beyond the grave.
