About Ella Cara Deloria
Ella Cara Deloria (1889-01-31) was an American novelist and anthropologist, known for her work in recording Sioux oral history and legends. She was of Yankton Dakota background and spent her early years on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation at Wakpala in South Dakota.
Deloria wrote the novel Waterlily in the 1940s, but it wasn’t published until 1988. Additionally, she was in the process of compiling a dictionary of the Lakota language at the time of her death.
Her parents were Mary Sully Bordeaux Deloria and Philip Joseph Deloria.
