About Ella Baker
Ella Baker (born December 13, 1903 in Norfolk, Virginia) was an American civil and human rights activist. She is best known for helping found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and her career spanned over five decades. Many consider her to be one of the most important women of the 20th century.
Before fame, when she was a child, her grandmother told her stories about slave revolts. In 1940 she was hired as a secretary for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Baker was born to Georgiana and Blake Baker and had three siblings. She married T.J. Roberts but they divorced in 1958.
