About Elizabeth Oakes Smith
Elizabeth Oakes Smith was an American poet and author born on August 12, 1806 in North Yarmouth, Maine. She is remembered for her poem “The Sinless Child” and feminist-themed essay collections such as “Woman and Her Needs.”
Prior to becoming a poet, Smith grew up in Maine where she taught Sunday School to African-American children at the age of twelve. She also authored novels including Riches Without Wings, The Newsboy, and Bertha and Lily.
In 1823, she married magazine editor Seba Smith with whom she had six sons.
