About Elizabeth Furse
Elizabeth Furse (born October 13, 1936) is a politician who became the first African-born person to be elected to the United States Congress. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, she later represented Oregon’s first congressional district in 1993 and also co-founded the Oregon Peace Institute.
Before her political career, Furse was involved in anti-Apartheid activism while living in South Africa. She participated in the first Black Sash demonstration in Cape Town in 1951. Additionally, she served as Director of the Institute for Tribal Government at Portland State University.
Furse married John C. Platt throughout her life.
