About Elizabeth Eckford
Elizabeth Eckford, born on October 4, 1941 in Little Rock, Arkansas, is a notable Civil Rights Leader. In 1957, she and eight other African-American teenagers were part of the Little Rock Nine who made history by integrating the previously segregated Little Rock Central High School.
On her first day at Little Rock Central, Eckford was barred from entry by the Arkansas National Guard but subsequently attended under military protection mandated by President Eisenhower. Despite this protection, she endured numerous incidents of racially-motivated violence.
Eckford later earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Ohio’s Central State University and served in the United States Army. She was born to Birdie and Oscar Eckford in Little Rock; tragically, her son Erin suffered from mental illness and was shot and killed by police in 2003.
