About Eliza Lucas
Eliza Lucas was an agricultural innovator and inventor, born on December 28, 1722 in England. She is renowned for her role in building colonial South Carolina’s economy by establishing indigo as a cash crop and major pre-Revolutionary War export. At the age of sixteen, she assumed the primary management of Wappoo Plantation, one of her family’s landholdings in South Carolina. Her son, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, played pivotal roles in signing the United States Constitution and running as the vice-presidential candidate for the Federalist Party in 1800. Eliza grew up on a sugar plantation in the British West Indies before marrying South Carolina Chief Justice Charles Pinckney.
