About Elisabeth Scott
Elisabeth Scott (1898-09-20) was an English architect known for her design of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in England. As the first important British building designed by a female architect, it holds historical significance.
Prior to pursuing architecture, Scott was homeschooled until the age of 14. She then enrolled in the newly opened Bedford Square branch of the Architectural Association and graduated in 1924. Her initial exposure to Scandinavian architecture came from employment with David Niven and Herbert Wigglesworth.
Despite retiring in 1968, she left a lasting legacy through her architectural contributions. Scott’s family background includes notable figures such as her father, a surgeon; nine siblings; and connections to renowned architects George Gilbert Scott, George Frederick Bodley, and Giles Gilbert Scott.
