About Elfriede Jelinek
Elfriede Jelinek is an Austrian playwright and fiction writer, born on October 20, 1946. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004 for her outstanding literary work.
Jelinek is best known for her novel The Piano Teacher (originally published in German as Die Klavierspielerin), which has garnered significant acclaim. Her other notable works include Lust and Die Kinder der Toten.
She began her writing career by publishing a collection of poems in 1967 before gaining international recognition for her impactful storytelling. Jelinek’s novel The Piano Teacher was adapted into a film starring Isabelle Huppert in 2001.
Born to a Catholic mother and Jewish father, Jelinek grew up in Vienna, Austria. In June of 1973, she married Gottfried Hungsberg.
