Eleni Kounalakis, born on March 3, 1966 in Sacramento, California, is a politician who has served as the 50th lieutenant governor of California as a Democrat. In January 2019, she became the first woman to assume this office.
Before her political career, Kounalakis earned a BA from Dartmouth College and later gained her MBA from UC Berkeley. She also served as the US ambassador to Hungary between 2010 and 2013 and received an honorary law doctorate degree from the American College of Greece in 2011.
She is married to Markos Kounalakis and they have two children together.
