About Elena Poniatowska
Elena Poniatowska, born on May 19, 1932 in France, is a prominent novelist known for her human rights-themed works of journalism and fiction. She gained particular recognition for her nonfiction work La Noche de Tlatelolco (1971), which addresses the 1968 massacre of protesting students by Mexican military and police forces.
Before rising to fame, Poniatowska began writing for Mexico City’s Excelsior daily paper at eighteen years old. Throughout her career, she produced acclaimed feminist-themed novels such as Lilus Kikusy (1954); Hasta no Verte Jesus Mio (1969); and Tinisima (1992). In 2013, she became the fourth female recipient of the prestigious Miguel de Cervantes Prize in Literature.
Born to French-Polish nobleman Jean Joseph Evremond Sperry Poniatowski and French-Mexican mother Maria Dolores Paulette Amor Yturbe, Elena spent her youth between France and Mexico. She married Mexican astronomer and astrophysicist Guillermo Haro with whom she had three children: Emmanuel, Felipe, and Paula.
