About Eleanor Farjeon
Eleanor Farjeon (1881-02-13) was an English children’s author, poet, and biographer. She is best known for her works such as Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard and Morning Has Broken. Farjeon received both the Carnegie Medal and the Hans Christian Andersen Award for her contributions to children’s literature.
Before gaining fame as a writer, Farjeon spent much of her childhood at home due to frequent illness, during which time she developed a love for reading and writing. At eighteen, she wrote the libretto for an operetta composed by her brother.
One of Farjeon’s notable accomplishments was transforming her poem “A Morning Song (For the First Day of Spring)” into the well-known hymn “Morning has Broken.” She came from a family of writers; her father was a novelist, and one of her younger brothers gained recognition for his mystery stories.
