About Eleanor Antin

Eleanor Antin, born on February 27, 1935 in New York, is a renowned multimedia conceptual artist best known for works such as “100 Boots,” “Carving: A Traditional Sculpture,” and “The Eight Temptations” from 1972.

Before gaining fame as an artist, she studied art, writing, and acting in New York City and later taught at the University of California, San Diego. Notably, she performed a staged reading with Ossie Davis at the first NAACP convention.

In her socially-themed work “Representational Painting,” she created video recordings of herself applying and re-applying makeup to explore identity presentation. Antin was born into a Polish Jewish family who immigrated to the United States shortly before her birth. She married writer and critic David Antin in 1961 after meeting him at City College.
