Effa Manley, born on March 27, 1897 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American sports executive and the first woman to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Known for her role as treasurer of the Negro League and co-ownership of the Newark Eagles with her husband, she later became the sole owner after his passing.
Prior to her career in sports management, Manley graduated from Penn Central High School and pursued a career in hatmaking. She also played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement by organizing a boycott against stores that refused to hire black salesclerks.
Manley’s legacy extends beyond her contributions to sports; she has left an indelible mark on American history as both a pioneer for women in executive roles and as a champion for civil rights causes.
