Dorothy Thompson (July 9, 1893) was an American journalist known as the “First Lady of Journalism.” She began her career at the New York Herald Tribune in the 1930s and continued to write a popular column well into the 1950s.
Before gaining fame, Thompson scored an exclusive interview with the Empress of Austria during World War I. After the war, she started reporting on the Nazi movement in Germany.
Thompson’s column “On The Record” in the New York Herald Tribune gained widespread syndication across over 150 other papers. In her writings, she warned about Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and recognized the threat it posed.
In her personal life, Dorothy Thompson was married to Sinclair Lewis, a prominent muckraking journalist and novelist.
