Dorothy Fields, born on July 15, 1905 in New Jersey, was a renowned songwriter known for her compositions including “Exactly Like You,” “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” She is credited with writing over 400 songs for Broadway and film.
Fields began her career by writing songs for Tin Pan Alley and Hollywood, establishing herself as one of the first successful female songwriters.
In 1939, she married David Eli Lahm and they had two children together. Her song “The Way You Look Tonight” from the film Swing Time garnered an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1936.
