About Doris Betts
Doris Betts was an American novelist born on June 4, 1932 in North Carolina. She is best known for her work “Beasts of the Southern Wild and Other Stories” (1973). One of her popular short stories, “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” inspired both an Academy Award-winning live action film and a stage musical.
After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Betts worked as a newspaper reporter before later becoming a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Betts received a Guggenheim Fellowship during her career. She married judge Lowry Betts and had one son named Erskine.
