About Djuna Barnes
Djuna Barnes (born June 12, 1892, in Storm King Mountain, New York) was a modernist poet and writer known for her groundbreaking novel Nightwood, which was published in 1936. She is also renowned for Ladies Almanack, a work from 1928 that centers on a group of Parisian lesbians.
Before gaining recognition as an author, Barnes quit school to work as a reporter for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Her early years were marked by trauma as she was raped, an experience that informed several of her literary works including her debut novel Ryder and her late play The Antiphon.
Barnes was known to be a friend of renowned author James Joyce. In 1923, she became engaged to Ernst Hanfstaengl and had numerous romantic relationships with both men and women throughout her life.
