About Djamila Ribeiro

Djamila Ribeiro, born on August 1, 1980 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a political activist and feminist known for her work as a columnist at Marie Claire Brasil. She also serves as a researcher and teacher of Political Philosophy at the Federal University of Sao Paulo and has authored the book “What is a Place of Speech?”.

Prior to gaining prominence, Ribeiro studied gender and race at the House of Culture of the Black Woman before earning her degree in Philosophy from UNIFESP in 2012 followed by her masters in 2015. In May 2016, she was appointed deputy secretary of Human Rights and Citizenship for the city of Sao Paulo.

Ribeiro is also recognized for writing the preface to Angela Davis‘s book “Women, Race, and Class.” Originally from Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil where she was raised with inspirations from her father – a communist militant who fueled her passion for political activism.
