About Dian Fossey

Dian Fossey, born on January 16, 1932 in San Francisco, California, was an American zoologist known for her groundbreaking work with gorillas in Rwanda. Fossey is best recognized for her advocacy against poaching and the publication of her book “Gorillas in the Mist” in 1983.

Before gaining fame as a zoologist, Fossey earned a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from San Jose State College. She went on to study and research extensively about gorilla groups at the Karisoke Research Center.

Fossey’s untimely death in 1985 remains unsolved, but some believe she was killed by those who regarded her as an obstacle to their exploitation of the gorillas for tourism and financial gain.

In terms of personal life, Dian Fossey was romantically involved with National Geographic photographer Bob Campbell. Her father, George E. Fossey III, served as a US Navy sailor during his career.
