About Diamanda Galas
Diamanda Galas, born on August 29, 1955 in San Diego, California, is an experimental musician and visual artist renowned for her distinctive vocal abilities and performance art. Recognized as a pop singer, she has released over 11 studio albums and seven live albums.
Galas was actively involved in AIDS activism during the 1980s. In the 1970s, she joined the jazz band Black Music Infinity before releasing her debut album “If Looks Could Kill” in 1979. Her acclaimed 1986 album “Divine Punishment” showcased her significant musical talent.
A soprano sfogato with a remarkable range of between three to eight octaves, Galas is also recognized for her skills as a painter; her artwork has been displayed in installations worldwide. Additionally, Galas’ voice has been featured in films such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Conan the Barbarian.
Her parents are Georgianna Koutrelakos-Galas, a Maniot Greek-American, and James Galas, an Egyptian-American of Greek heritage. Although both were raised within Greek Orthodox Culture they identified as agnostic.
