About Dede Mirabal
Dede Mirabal, born on March 1, 1925 in the Dominican Republic, was a revolutionary known for her opposition to the regime of dictator Rafael Trujillo. She gained widespread attention after her three sisters were assassinated on November 25, 1960 for their anti-Trujillo activities.
Despite narrowly escaping death herself that day, Dede continued to oppose Trujillo’s rule and later opened a museum in honor of her slain sisters. Before gaining notoriety as a revolutionary figure, she and her siblings formed an anti-Trujillo organization known as the Movement of the Fourteenth of June.
In recognition of Dede Mirabal’s murdered sisters, the United Nations General Assembly established an International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women held annually on November 25. Despite initially discouraging her from becoming involved in revolutionary activities, Dede’s husband Jaimito could not dissuade her from actively opposing Trujillo’s violent regime.
