About Deborah Sampson

Deborah Sampson was a Revolutionary War heroine, born on December 17, 1760, in Plympton, Massachusetts. She is known for her extraordinary feat of dressing as a man and successfully serving in the Continental Army for more than 17 months.

Before fame, her first attempt at joining the army disguised as a man failed when she was discovered holding her quill pen like a woman. Despite this setback, she persevered and went on to brave two leg wounds in 1782. Fearing discovery, she refused treatment and even removed one of the musket balls with a pocket knife.

Sampson came from an interesting family background; her grandmother Priscilla Mullins Alden sailed to America on the Mayflower. In addition to her role as a war hero, Sampson led an ordinary family life – she was married to Benjamin Gannett and they had four children together.
