About Dawn Therese Brancheau
Dawn Therese Brancheau (April 16, 1969 – February 24, 2010) was an American marine mammal trainer known for her work with orcas at SeaWorld. She gained prominence as one of the company’s most prominent trainers before she tragically lost her life during a performance with the orca Tilikum. This incident led to significant safety changes and was prominently featured in the documentary Blackfish.
Before joining SeaWorld, Brancheau attended the University of South Carolina where she studied animal behavior. Her career began at Six Flags in New Jersey where she worked with dolphins before eventually joining SeaWorld in 1994.
Brancheau’s death led to several safety measures being implemented by SeaWorld, including forbidding trainers from entering the water with an orca after that point forward. Notably, while she was the first SeaWorld trainer to be killed by Tilikum, she was actually the third human being to lose their life due to him.
Brancheau hailed from Indiana and was born to Marion and Charles LoVerde. In 1996, she married Scott Brancheau.
