About Clara Barton
Clara Barton, born on December 25, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts, was a prominent figure known for her role as a Civil War volunteer nurse and founder of the American Red Cross. Before gaining recognition for her humanitarian work, Barton spent twelve years as an educator in Canada and West Georgia before establishing the first free school in New Jersey. Notably, during the Civil War, she received valuable support from Massachusetts Senator Henry Wilson.
Barton’s interest in nursing stemmed from personal experiences; she initially cared for her brother after he sustained a serious injury and doctors had given up hope. Her family played a significant role in shaping Barton’s values and skills – from learning math from her brother Stephen to developing piety through the influence of her parents Sarah and Stephen.
