About Charlotte Riddell
Charlotte Riddell (born September 30, 1832) was an Irish novelist and editor who became one of the most successful and prolific writers of the Victorian era. She is known for penning close to forty novels, several short story collections, and serving as editor of the prominent literary journal St. James’s Magazine.
Prior to her success, Riddell wrote under the pen name F.G. Trafford and published her first novel, “The Moors and the Fens,” in 1858.
Riddell was also notable for her numerous ghost stories, with many of her novels such as “The Haunted River” and “The Nun’s Curse” containing supernatural themes.
She was born Charlotte Eliza Lawson Cowan in County Antrim, Ireland to Ellen Kilshaw and Sheriff James Cowan. After relocating to London in the mid-1850s, she married civil engineer Joseph Hadley Riddell.
