About Catherine Drinker Bowen

Catherine Drinker Bowen was an esteemed American non-fiction author, born on January 1, 1897 in Pennsylvania. She is known for winning the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1958 and for her numerous biographical works including “Free artist: The story of Anton and Nicholas Rubinstein” (1939) and “The Lion and the Throne: The Life and Times of Sir Edward Coke” (1957).

Before becoming a renowned author, Bowen was an accomplished violinist who trained at the Peabody Institute and the Juilliard School of Music. Her first biography, “Beloved Friend: The Story of Tchaikowsky and Nadejda Von Meck,” published in 1937 was centered around music.

Bowen managed to become a bestselling author despite not having a formal high-level education. She came from a prominent Quaker family with four brothers. She later married Lehigh University Economics Department Chair, Ezra Bowen; together they had a son and a daughter.
