About Catharine Beecher
Catharine Beecher was a renowned nineteenth-century American teacher and educational crusader who dedicated her life to fighting for educational rights for women. Born on September 6, 1800, in New York, she established the Hartford Female Seminary in 1823 before moving to Ohio to open several frontier schools.
Beecher advocated for the value of kindergarten education and in 1852, she founded The American Woman’s Educational Association. She came from a prominent family; her parents were Roxanna Foote Beecher and clergyman Lyman Beecher.
