About Caroline Norton
Caroline Norton (1808-03-22) was a British author, social and legal reformer, and feminist. She is known for her novels such as The Dandies Rout, Stuart of Dunleath, and Old Sir Douglas. Her poetry collections include The Dream, The Child of the Islands, and The Sorrows of Rosalie. She was born in England to an actor/soldier of Irish descent and a Scottish noblewoman.
In 1827 she married George Chapple Norton but left him in 1836 leading to a high-profile trial that resulted in significant divorce-related laws being championed by Caroline Norton herself. Her son William’s tragic death from a horse riding injury deeply affected her.
