About Carol Grace
Carol Grace (September 11, 1924) was an American actress and author best known for her marriages to writer William Saroyan and actor Walter Matthau. Born in New York, she grew up in foster care on the city’s Lower East Side, later attending the same high school as Oona Chaplin, who married Charlie Chaplin. She is credited with inspiring Truman Capote’s character Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Her 1995 novella, The Secret in the Daisy, drew from her experiences in the foster care system. Grace was twice married to William Saroyan before marrying Walter Matthau in 1959; they remained together until Matthau’s passing.
