About Betty Ong
Betty Ong was an American Airlines flight attendant who tragically lost her life during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Born in San Francisco, California on February 5, 1956 to a Chinese-American family, she grew up with two older sisters and one older brother.
After graduating from George Washington High School in San Francisco, Ong pursued a career as a flight attendant and eventually made Andover, Massachusetts her home base.
Ong’s bravery and heroism shone through during the tragic events of September 11th when she and another flight attendant named Amy Sweeney notified the airline that their plane had been hijacked. She had arranged to fly on American Airlines Flight 11 so she could transfer to a Los Angeles-to-Hawaii flight for a vacation with her sister.
Her story was later portrayed by actress Jean Yoon in an ABC miniseries titled The Path to 9/11.
