About Bettina Von Arnim
Bettina von Arnim, born on April 4, 1785 in Frankfurt, Germany, was a renowned German author and patron of the arts during the Romantic era. In addition to her accomplishments as a novelist, she was also known for her talents as a musical composer and singer.
Her most famous work is the 1835 publication “Goethes Briefwechsel mit einem Kinde” (Goethe’s Correspondence with a Child). Among her other literary works are “An Die aufgeloste Preußische Nationalversammlung” (1849) and “Ilius Pamphilius und Die Ambrosia” (1848).
Born Elisabeth Catharina Ludovica Magdalena Brentano to an Italian merchant family in Frankfurt am Main, Bettina von Arnim received her education at a Fritzlar convent school before rising to fame as an accomplished writer and artist.
She is noted for her unrequited love for the famed writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Her friendship with him came to an end when she began displaying jealous behavior toward Goethe’s wife. She went on to marry Romantic poet Achim von Arnim and together they raised seven children, including their daughter Gisela von Arnim who followed in her mother’s footsteps by becoming a writer.
