About Berthe Morisot
Berthe Morisot was a French painter and prominent member of the nineteenth-century Impressionist movement. Born on January 14, 1841, in France, she is remembered for her masterwork “The Cradle” (1872) as well as other major works such as “Reading” (1873), “Lady at her Toilette” (1875), “On the Balcony” (1872), and “Summer Day” (1879).
Before gaining fame, Morisot studied under painters Camille Corot and Achille Oudinot, exhibiting two of her early landscape paintings at the 1864 Salon de Paris.
Her work can now be found in permanent homes at major galleries including the Louvre in Paris; the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; and The National Gallery in London.
Morisot grew up with a privileged upbringing in Bourges and Paris, France. She was one of four children born to Edme Tiburce Morisot and Marie-Josephine-Cornelie Thomas. In the mid-1870s until his death in the early 1890s, she was married to Eugene Manet with whom they had a daughter named Julie who often served as her subject
