About Barbara Jordan
Barbara Jordan was born on February 21, 1936, in Houston, Texas. She was a pioneering politician and the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction. Additionally, she made history as the first Southern black female elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1973.
Jordan was honored with induction into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame in 1984 for her groundbreaking achievements. Before entering politics, she spent time at the Tuskegee Institute teaching Political Science.
A notable moment in her career came when she became the first African-American woman to deliver a keynote address at a Democratic National Convention. Following her passing, Barbara Jordan became the first African American buried in Texas State Cemetery.
She was born as the youngest of three children to Benjamin Jordan and Arlyne Jordan.
