About Barbara Mertz
Barbara Mertz, born on September 29, 1927, in Illinois, was an American novelist known for her Agatha and Anthony Award-winning novels, including Naked Once More and Trojan Gold. She wrote mystery novels, thrillers, and works of Gothic fiction. In addition to fiction writing, she also published several acclaimed nonfiction works such as Amelia Peabody’s Egypt: A Compendium and Two Thousand Years in Rome.
Prior to her literary career taking off, Mertz earned a Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago. Her first nonfiction book titled Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs was published in 1964. Following this success was the publication of her debut novel The Master of Blacktower two years later.
Under the pen name Elizabeth Peters, she gained fame for creating popular adventure and mystery series featuring characters like Amelia Peabody, Vicky Bliss, and Jacqueline Kirby. Additionally using the alternate pseudonym Barbara Michaels,she authored the Someone in the House Seriesandthe Georgetown Trilogy.
Mertz hailed from Illinois but eventually settled in Maryland where she created her pen name Elizabeth Peters by combining the names of her children –Elizabeth and Peter Mertz.
