Ava Helen Pauling was born on December 24, 1903 in Beavercreek, Oregon. Throughout her life, she was a prominent civil rights leader and advocate for various social movements including women’s rights, racial equality, and the end of nuclear proliferation.
Before gaining fame for her activism, Ava Helen was influenced by the socialist views of her mother and engaged in conversations with a family friend who was a judge.
As the wife of renowned scientist Linus Pauling, she played a pivotal role in interesting him in the cause of nuclear disarmament which ultimately led to his Nobel Peace Prize win in 1962 for his work on the Partial Test Ban Treaty.
Ava Helen had four children with Linus Pauling and remained committed to their shared pursuits as activists throughout their lives.
