About Augusta Savage
Augusta Savage (1892-02-29) was an influential sculptor during the Harlem Renaissance, known for her advocacy of equal rights. Hailing from Florida, she gained early recognition for her skill in molding clay structures at the Palm Beach County Fair, earning $175 for her work.
Her notable works include Gamin, W.E.B. Dubois, and Lift Every Voice and Sing. She was also recognized as the first African-American accepted into the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors in 1934.
Savage had a brief marriage to James Savage before marrying Robert Lincoln Poston in 1923.
