About Antonia Brico
Antonia Brico was a Dutch-born composer and the first female conductor to lead the New York Philharmonic. Born on June 26, 1902 in the Netherlands, she emigrated to the United States with her foster parents in 1908. They settled in California.
Prior to her conducting career, Brico studied composition at the University of California, Berkeley and gained experience as an assistant for the director of the San Francisco Opera. In 1942, after settling in Denver, Colorado, she founded the Women’s String Ensemble.
Brico’s achievements were captured in a documentary titled “Antonia: A Portrait of a Woman” released in 1974. She left behind a legacy as a pioneering figure for women composers and conductors.
