About Anne Lister
Anne Lister was an English diarist born on April 3, 1791, in Halifax, England. She is known for her role as “the first modern lesbian” and was involved in the first known British lesbian wedding when she married Ann Walker in 1834 at the Holy Trinity Church in York. Lister tragically passed away after being stung by an insect while traveling through Russia.
Before gaining fame for her diaries, Anne inherited land and property from her parents which allowed her to become a successful businesswoman. She began writing in her diaries at age 15 and used them to document her romantic experiences with women.
She earned the nickname ‘Gentleman Jack’ and much of her writing remained encoded until after her death. Her family life included a father, Jeremy Lister, who was a soldier, and a mother named Rebecca who gave birth to Anne along with six other children.
Anne Lister’s writings provide significant insights into contemporary life in Western Yorkshire as well as revealing details about her interests such as mining, canals, and railways
