About Anna Sewell
Anna Sewell was an English novelist known for her only published work, Black Beauty, which is considered a classic of English children’s literature. She was born on March 30, 1820 in England and grew up to become a renowned author.
Sewell passed away just five months after the publication of Black Beauty, so she was unable to enjoy its success. Before gaining fame as a writer, she did not receive formal education until moving to Stoke Newington at age twelve. Her family had strong ties to the Church of England.
An interesting fact about Sewell is that due to ankle injuries sustained in childhood, she never could walk without the use of crutches. Her mother, Mary Wright Sewell, was also a famous children’s author. Anna had one younger brother named Phillip.
