About Anita Darian
Anita Darian was a renowned opera singer, born on April 26, 1927, in Michigan. She gained fame for her performances with the New York Philharmonic and the New York City Opera. One of her notable roles was portraying Lady Thiang in the 1960 production of The King and I at the New York City Center.
Before achieving stardom, she trained at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and at Juilliard School in New York. Darian also performed with the Sauter-Finegan jazz band based in New York.
A notable trivia about her is that she sang the high soprano line in The Tokens’ chart-topping song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” during the early 1960s. Born to an Armenian family in Detroit, Anita Margaret Esgandarian later moved to New York City where she pursued her career as an opera singer.
