About Alison Smithson

Alison Smithson was a British architect born on June 22, 1928, in England. She is best known for her work with her husband and business partner, Peter Smithson, including the design of The Economist Building in London. The couple popularized the streets-in-the-sky concept and were members of the Independent Group whose work was featured at the Institute of Contemporary Arts’ 1953 Parallel of Life and Art exhibition, as well as the 1956 This is Tomorrow exhibition.

Prior to gaining recognition for their architectural achievements, Alison studied architecture at Durham University. Together with her husband, they achieved acclaim through their Hunstanton School project which employed variations on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s techniques.

In 1950, she and her husband started their own practice after Alison had worked in the architecture department of the London County Council. Born into a family residing in Sheffield, South Yorkshire; she married Peter in 1949 after meeting him at Durham.
