About Alison Lapper
Alison Lapper was born on April 7, 1965, in England. Despite being born without arms and truncated legs due to the condition phocomelia, she rose to prominence as a master photographer, painter, and digital artist. She attended The Faculty of Arts and Architecture at the University of Brighton in London and graduated in 1994 with a first-class honors degree in Fine Art.
Lapper is known for her extraordinary abilities as a painter using her mouth and became a prominent member of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of the World. She gained further recognition when she became the subject of Mark Quinn’s sculpture “Alison Lapper Pregnant” in 2007. This piece later inspired a larger scale replica for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Paralympics.
Despite facing physical challenges, Lapper went on to embrace her condition and refused to wear artificial limbs. In 1999, she gave birth to her son Parys who would go on to star alongside her in “Child of Our Time,” a continuous BBC documentary series.
