Andrea Horwath, born on October 24, 1962 in Hamilton, Canada, is a Canadian politician known for her work as a community development coordinator. She made history as the first woman to be elected leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party and has served as a member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament for Hamilton Centre.
Horwath attended McMaster University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Labour Studies before working closely with the Hamilton Labour Movement. Her political career began in 1997 when she was elected to Hamilton City Council. In 2004, she was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and became party leader after its 2009 leadership convention.
In March 2012, Horwath received the Eve award presented by Equal Voice, a non-profit organization focused on promoting women in politics. She is married to Ben Leonetti and has deep roots in her hometown of Hamilton, Ontario.
