About Amy Clampitt

Amy Clampitt was a twentieth-century American poet, author, and recipient of the Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships. She was born on June 15, 1920, in Iowa into an Iowa Quaker family. She was raised in New Providence, Iowa and graduated from Grinnell College before relocating to New York City.

Clampitt published nine poetry collections during her career including What the Light Was Like, Westward, and A Silence Opens. Remarkably, she published her first full-length poetry collection titled The Kingfisher at the age of sixty-three.

In addition to her writing career, she also taught at various universities including Amherst College, Smith College, and the College of William and Mary.
