About Amelia Boynton Robinson
Amelia Boynton Robinson was born on August 18, 1911 in Savannah, Georgia. She was a prominent Civil Rights Leader remembered for her pivotal role in the Alabama civil rights march that became known as Bloody Sunday and ultimately led to the passing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. In 1990, she received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Medal.
Before gaining recognition for her impactful activism, Boynton Robinson’s home in Selma, Alabama served as a crucial headquarters for her state’s civil rights movement during the early 1960s. Additionally, she made history by launching an influential but ultimately unsuccessful campaign for United States Congress in 1964.
Boynton Robinson met her husband S.W. Boynton while studying at the Tuskegee Institute.
