About Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart (born July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas) was a legendary aviation pioneer known for her accomplishments as a pilot. She made history by becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean and earned the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross.
In addition to her flying achievements, Earhart helped form a group of female pilots called The Ninety-Nines. Before gaining fame as a pilot, she spent time delivering medication and meals to wounded World War I soldiers at Spadina Military Hospital in her early 20s.
Throughout her life, Earhart remained close friends with Eleanor Roosevelt and joined Purdue’s aviation department in 1935. Tragically, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while flying in June 1937 and was declared dead in absentia in January 1939.
Earhart married George P. Putnam on February 7, 1931 after turning down six proposals prior to accepting his hand in marriage.
