About Amelia Bloomer

Amelia Bloomer, born on May 27, 1818 in New York, was an activist known for her advocacy for temperance and women’s rights. She gained recognition as the editor of The Lily, a women’s periodical, and for her participation in the historic 1848 Seneca Falls Convention.

Prior to her activism work, she served as a governess to Oren Chamberlain’s children during her early adulthood years. Bloomer is also remembered as the namesake of “bloomers,” a prominent component of a mid-nineteenth-century women’s clothing trend.

Bloomer married lawyer Dexter Bloomer in her early twenties. A native of Homer, New York, she passed away at the age of seventy-six in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
